Guelph United Football Club plays in Ontario’s highest-level semi-pro league, the Ontario Premier League (OPL). It is the 3rd division of Canadian soccer, formerly known as League1 Ontario. Our women’s team plays in the top-tier OPL1, while the men’s team plays in the second-tier OPL2. Our Reserve teams play in the OPL3 and OPLU20 respectively
The Ontario Premier League is Ontario’s pro-am, standards-based, senior league. Founded in 2014, the league began with a ten-team men’s division and has since grown to 24 teams in the men’s division and 20 in the women’s, organized into 3 tiers (OPL1, OPL2, and OPL3) with promotion and relegation between them.
The league is owned and managed by Canadian Soccer Business (CSB), and is sanctioned by FIFA through the domestic bodies of Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer. Together with L1 Quebec, BC Premier League, Alberta Premier League and Prairies Premier League, it currently sits at the third tier of the Canadian soccer pyramid, with CPL (Canadian Premier League) and NSL (Northern Super League) at the first tier, and no current second-tier leagues. OPL serves as a stepping stone between high-performance youth and the game's professional levels.
