Guelph United Football Club is part of Ontario’s highest-level semi-pro league, Ontario Premier League (3rd division of soccer in Canada, formerly known as League1 Ontario). Our women’s team plays in the top-tier OPL1, while the men’s team plays in the second-tier OPL2.
Ontario Premier League is the province of Ontario’s pro-am, standards-based, senior league. Founded in 2014, the league began with a ten-team men’s division, which has now grown to 24 teams in the men’s division and 20 in the women’s, organized in 3 tiers (OPL1, OPL2 and OPL3), with promotion and relegation between them.
The league is owned and managed by CSB (Canadian Soccer Business), and is sanctioned by FIFA through the domestic bodies of Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer. Together with L1 Quebec, BC Premier League, Alberta Premier League and Prairies Premier League, it currently sits at the third tier of the Canadian soccer pyramid, with CPL (Canadian Premier League) and NSL (Northern Super League) at the first tier, and no current second tier leagues. OPL serves as a stepping stone between the high-performance youth level and the professional levels of the game.
