Guelph United FC wins 6 games out of 7
August 7, 2022, Guelph, ON – Guelph United FC has won six out of their last seven games after a win and a loss on the road last week.
With only a few games remaining in the League1 Ontario men’s premier season, Guelph United continues to push hard for a playoff spot. The team dropped their match to league leaders Vaughan Azzurri last Wednesday evening as the rain made for a slippery and challenging match at North Maple Regional Park. After gaining an early lead thanks to a goal from Marcel Zajac, Guelph would enter the second half up by one.
However, two quick goals by Vaughan’s Koisochukwu Nwafornso in the second half would lift the home team to a 2 - 1 win as Guelph was unable to find a response. These results saw Vaughan maintain their perfect record and Guelph dropped crucial points in a close playoff race.
Guelph United bounced back on Saturday evening with a 4 - 3 victory over FC London. While FC London found the back of the net first, Guelph’s Anthony Ostrun quickly brought both teams even and two consecutive goals by Jared Agyemang gave the visitors a healthy lead.
With Guelph leading 3 - 1, FC London turned up the pressure and were able to mount a comeback against the reigning champions. Goals from Jonathan Kam and Kb Bekwayo, the latter coming off a penalty shot, would see FC London tie the match with only 10 minutes remaining.
Owen McKee would ultimately score the game winner for Guelph as he buries the London goalkeeper's rebound after a free kick.
Guelph United is now 12 - 4 - 3 on the season and are tied for fifth place in the standings. The team will take on BVB IA Waterloo on Tuesday evening and will play their last regular season home game on Friday, August 12 against Darby FC. Will the 2021 League1 Champions get the opportunity to defend their title?
