United looks to continue win streak tonight, as Union splits games

Guelph United got another win last Friday in Whitby, and is looking to keep the streak going, tonight at the Centennial Bowl, against Windsor City FC.

Meanwhile, the women’s team split two games last week: an important win against Tecumseh SC, and a tough loss against top ranked Vaughan Azzurri.

Guelph United’s solid form continued last week. After the impressive home win against current champions Vaughan Azzurri, Justin Springer’s side went to Whitby on Friday, to face Darby FC, and came home with the same result: a 1-0 win, a Carter Robart clean sheet, and an all important 3 points. Milan Beader bagged the only goal of the match, his fifth of the season. Our team is still 3 points below league leaders Blue Devils FC, in a very crowded top of the standings, which sees the top 9 teams separated by only 6 points.

Only the first 6 teams qualify for the playoffs, so every point matters, and United will go for another 3, tonight at 8 PM, at the Centennial Bowl. Our guests are Windsor City FC, a mid-table team who needs a winning run to get back in the playoff conversation. Join us by getting your tickets in our shop.

Justin Springer is dealing with multiple knocks in the squad, with Camilo Vasconcelos, Marko Maletic, Harvey Marchant, Anthony Ostrun, John Greenhough and Parmpreet Johal all unavailable for tonight’s match. None of the injuries are serious, though, so all of these players should be good to go for the playoff run. The long list of absences meant having to call a few players from the U21 squad. Nicholas Dunn, Ethan Fraser and Aiden Borges are on the roster for tonight, and will have a chance to make their senior debut.

Meanwhile, Guelph Union is still on the outside looking in, after a week which saw us get a huge win against Tecumseh SC, and a tough loss against one of the best teams in the league, Vaughan Azzurri. Union is now 4 points below the last playoff spot, but, with 5 games to go, everything is still to play for. Even more important is the combined standings that will determine next year’s split into tiered divisions. Despite Sunday’s loss, Union is still only 1.25 points below the line. Our ladies’ next game is on Sunday, away at Woodbridge Strikers.
