Guelph Union clinches spot in 2024 League1 Ontario Premier Division!

The good news keep coming!

After last night our men’s U21 team won the Southwest Division and clinched a playoff spot, it’s now the Union’s turn to accomplish their biggest objective for the season: we have clinched the 10th and final spot for next year’s Premier Division!

From next season, League1 Ontario will switch to a tiered format with promotion/relegation, in which the 10 best teams over the last 2 years will form the top-tier Premier Division. Our men’s team has booked their spot a few weeks ago, and now the ladies did so as well, at the end of an impressive month in which we needed results, and we got them: 4 consecutive undefeated games, including 3 wins.

And none of them bigger than this afternoon, in downtown Toronto, at Varsity Stadium, against an Alliance United team ahead of us in the standings, and who already clinched their playoff spot for this year.

After a hard fought match in which Alliance dominated and our goalie Christina Alexander made a couple of great saves, it was, once again, our top goalscorer Victoria Hinchliffe providing the dagger, in the 78th minute, after a beautiful header. It was her 10th goal of the season, and arguably, the most important one, as it put our team above the line, with Blue Devils unable to pass us regardless of the outcome of their match.

Still, the win wasn’t a guarantee. St. Catharines Roma Wolves were 5.25 points behind us in the combined 2022-23 standings, with 2 games remaining. But, later in the evening, they lost to Unionville, result which clinched our spot for next year’s Premier Division.

This was the last game of the season for our ladies. We’d like to thank all of you who attended our games, and we look forward to seeing you back at the Bowl, in a new division of the best 10 teams in the league, that your Union will be part of.

Meanwhile, our men’s team is still involved in an exciting playoff fight, and is headed to Barrie on Sunday, for a 6.30 PM match against one of our main rivals, Simcoe County Rovers.
