Mixed away week for our teams

This past week has seen our two teams play a total of three games, all of them away from home. And, although we did not obtain any wins, there are plenty of positives to talk about.

The men travelled to Mississauga, to face North Mississauga SC, on Friday night, and managed to keep the undefeated streak going, with a 1-1 draw. Leo Shrimpton opened the scoring for Guelph in the first half, with his second goal of the season, before Frank Previte tied the game for the hosts. Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the second half, but nobody did, with the game ending in a tie.

Guelph United is now one of three undefeated teams in League1 Ontario this season, alongside Vaughan and Blue Devils. We are sitting on a playoff spot after 7 games played, with our next game being at home, at Centennial Bowl, next Sunday at 5.30 PM, against St. Catharines Roma Wolves.

Our women’s team had an even busier week. On Wednesday, Guelph Union travelled to Whitby, to face Darby FC. Unfortunately, Darby managed to win 2-1, after an excellent start to the game which saw them score twice in the first 12 minutes. Just before the half, Union got a goal back through Katherine Knafelc, who chipped a shot over the keeper’s head to cut the lead in half. The second half saw our team create multiple opportunities to tie, including a cross bar from Victoria Hinchcliffe in the 80th minute, but the score held and Darby walked away with the win.

3 days later, on Saturday, the Union travelled to London, for another away game. It was a back and forth affair, that saw our team take the lead in the second half through Olivia Rizakos, before the hosts tied the game in the 89th minute for a 1-1 draw.

Guelph Union is now in 12th place, but only 2 points behind the playoff spots, and will come home on Wednesday, June 7th, for a matchup at the Centennial Bowl against Blue Devils FC.
