September 24th, 2021, London, ON - After 90 minutes of hard-fought play, Guelph’s first and only men’s semi-pro soccer club, Guelph United Football Club, marked their first loss of the season, 3-1 against FC London. Played at the Hellenic Community Centre in the Forest City, the match’s pressures presented themselves almost immediately; a storm system which brough constant rain over the past 36 hours had left the field water-logged with ball play being unpredictable.

Despite these trials and tribulations, the #UnitedFront were first in the referee’s wallet book as Tomasz Skublak (#8) scored his sixth goal on the season off a beautiful strike at the 36th minute mark. Skublak’s goal would be the only time Guelph would find the back of the net and it would be quickly responded to by FCL’s Ethan Gopaul at the 40th minute. Over half an hour would pass before FC London’s Connor Wilson would net the home side’s second of the match, bringing the first major challenge to Guelph’s dominance over the league this season. Ten minutes later in the final minutes of play, London’s Gopaul would net his second and London’s third goal of the match, securing the victory for Forest City’s finest.

This second match up between these two sides marks the first loss for Guelph United; the previous meeting between Guelph and London on July 30th saw the former win 6-0 in their inaugural match and home opener. With Guelph now sitting 6-1-0 in the League1 Ontario’s West division and FC London sitting 6-2-0, the two clubs are now tied with 18 points apiece, however Guelph remains in the top seed as they a game in hand over FCL, with their September 11th match up vs Sigma FC having been postponed due to COVID-19.

The #UnitedFront will look to get back in stride in their next match which sees them taking on Milton’s Scrosoppi FC at the University of Guelph’s Alumni Stadium on October 2nd at 1pm. Tickets can be purchased at guelphunitedfc.ca/shop.
