United Takes Gold: Team Finishes First in Ontario West Division
October 23rd, 2021, Mississauga, ON - Today marks a day in the history books for Guelph United FC (10-2-0) after todays win against Sigma FC (4-5-3). Today’s win was hosted at the Iceland Mississauga Field finished with a score of 3-1. GUFC finish their regular season sitting in the first-place spot in their inaugural season, which allows GUFC to host the semifinals on home turf. Guelph sits at 30 points this season, 4 points above their second-place rivals, Oakville based team, the Blue Devils FC.
The match’s pressure presented themselves almost immediately as the first goal was seen at the 8th minute by GUFC very own, Jace Kotosopoulos (#10), team captain and current L1O Golden Boot prospect. Sigma FC made a quick comeback scoring a goal on goalkeeper, Svyatik Artemenko (#1) just one minute later to tie up the match, marking Sigma’s first and only goal of the match. Only 20 minutes later Guelphs team captain, Jace Kotosopoulos (#10) scored his second goal of the game in a penalty shot against Sigma’s keeper. This marks Jace Kotosopoulos (#10) 15th goal of the season. The final goal of todays match did not present itself until the second half when Tomasz Skublak (#8) scored a goal at the 50th minute, securing victory and the first-place spot for the Royal City.
When asked about the win, team captain, Jace Kotosopoulos (#10) shared “I am very pleased with our team’s performance and the result [this game], since a win today was crucial. Not only did we clinch first place in our first season, but now we are entering playoff on a solid win [which has given us] lots of confidence for playoffs”. The #UnitedFront sit atop of the Leagure1ON West Division in their inaugural season and are set to face off against the second-place team of the East division, Master’s FA.
