Big win for men’s team in mixed double-header Sunday
But it was the attacking play of our team that impressed the most. A Colin Gander header opened the scoring, which was followed by Jared Agyemang’s 8th goal of the season, who coolly buried a ball from inside of the box. Kyle Cordeiro scored his third goal for Guelph United in the 67th minute, and Agyemang got his second at the end of a great counter attack and beautiful assist from Cordeiro.
The win brings our team up to 10th place, one point above Sigma and the relegation line. Up next: another home tilt, this Wednesday, against last place Hamilton United.
Guelph United - Sigma FC 4-0 (1-0)
Goals: Gander (‘18), Agyemang (‘47, ‘78), Cordeiro (‘67)
Yellow cards: - / Finelli
Guelph United: Robart - Ferdinand, Green, Dunn, Gander - Pusztahegyi, MacIntyre, Ostrun (‘81 Clack), Meheshem, Cordeiro - Agyemang (‘79 Andreacchi).
In the first match of the day, our women’s team faced FC London, a team that already won twice against us this season, at home, 4-1 in both the league and the cup quarter-finals. This time, the match was much closer, with our team dominating large stretches of the game, and creating plenty of opportunities to score. Only once we got caught on a counter attack, which left Lauren Rowe 1 on 1 with Bree Carreiro, and managed to score the only goal of the match. Despite the loss, however, it was an encouraging performance.
Our women’s team is now in 7th place, 3 points above the relegation danger, with 5 games left in the season. The schedule is not getting any easier, however, with our team being back at the Bowl on Tuesday, when we’ll face league leaders NDC Ontario - the only undefeated team in the league - however, a team that we defeated once before, in the L1 Cup.
Guelph United - FC London 0-1 (0-0)
Goal: L. Rowe (‘68)
Guelph United: Carreiro - Starcevic, Knafelc, Ward, Crichton - Hipkin, Canning (‘79 Oliveira), Mihalopulos - Sealy (‘64 Johnston), Hinchliffe (‘64 Marikano), Rizakos.
