GUFC Men lose against Woodbridge, but stay alive
After a series of disappointing results and performances, and with many regular starters out due to injury or having to return to their universities for the U-Sports season, Guelph United didn’t let any of that get in the way of a spirited, attacking display, against a Woodbridge team safely in fourth place of the League1 Ontario standings.
We attacked from beginning till end, a positive display of free-flowing football, and countless chances created. League1 doesn’t provide stats, but we had at least 20 shots, and 7 or 8 clear-cut chances to score, but either the post, or Woodbridge’s goalkeeper David Carano, who was by far the player of the match, kept us off the scoreboard. The only goal of the match came shortly after the half, in the pouring rain, scored by Adriano Colangelo.
The loss means we’re still 4 points below the relegation safety line, with 2 matches to go. Next Saturday, we’re in Mississauga, playing our direct rivals, Sigma FC. That will be a must-win match - any other result means we will finish in 11th, and will have to play a relegation playoff match against a Championship side to stay in the Premier Division. If we do win at Sigma, everything will be decided in the last match of the season, when we host Simcoe County, and Sigma plays away to Woodbridge.
