Big win for our women’s team against 2023 champions Alliance United

GUFC Women started the season with the most difficult schedule imaginable - away from home against the league favorites in the first 2 games, followed by a trip to 2023 champions Alliance United. And, after two good games that resulted in no points, we finally got the breakthrough we deserved, with an impressive come from behind win in Scarborough.

The game at Alliance United barely started when the hosts opened the scoring, in the 3rd minute, by Miranda Badovinac. But Guelph United, slowly but surely, started to take control of midfield and play a good, offensive brand of football, which paid off in the second half. First, it was Tiffany Johnston who tied the match in the 55th minute. Then, in the 90th minute, Sasha Marikano got her third goal of the young season, with a beautiful header, that brought Guelph the win, and the first 3 points of the year.

Up next for our ladies is yet another away match, at FC London, before the home debut at the Centennial Bowl: first, a L1 Cup match against NDC Ontario on May 21st, followed by the first home match in the league, against North Mississauga SC, on May 26th.

Alliance United - Guelph United 1-2 (1-0)
Goals: Badovinac (‘3) / Johnston (‘55), Marikano (‘90)
Guelph United:
Carreiro - Burke, Van Der Laan, Crichton, Ladhani - Mihalopulos, Oliveira (‘69 Hipkin), Johnston (‘68 Ward) - Brown (‘60 Marikano), Hinchliffe (‘69 Sealy), Rizakos (‘90 Falkenstein).

GUFC Men travelled to Cambridge, for the first home match of the season, hosted by our affiliate club Oriental. Our opponents, Burlington SC, started the season perfectly - with 2 wins in their first 2 matches - but it was our team who controlled most of the first half. A big miss from Jared Agyemang, playing his 50th match in a Guelph United jersey, was the biggest opportunity in the first 45 minutes. After the break, a bad mistake from the referee, who didn’t call a blatant offensive foul which resulted in a 1-on-1 opportunity for Augustus Oku, led to the first and only goal of the match. Unfortunately, after the goal, our team didn’t manage to continue the good play from the first half, and only created one good chance to equalize, by Matthaus Garcia, while Burlington’s solid play and effective counters led to more opportunities to score.

Next for our team is the highly expected Centennial Bowl opener, on Wednesday May 15th, in a cup match against League2 side The Borough FC.

Guelph United - Burlington SC 0-1 (0-0)
Goals: - / Oku (‘53)
Guelph United:
Mcpherson - Pusztahegyi, Green, Fernandez, Davison - MacIntyre (‘90 Meheshem) - Garcia (‘88 Ostrun), Cordeiro (‘78 Beqiri), Yates, Gander - Agyemang.
