Cup magic: GUFC Women defeats NDC Ontario

Guelph United Women defeated perennial favorites NDC Ontario, last night, in a memorable match in the Round of 16 of the L1 Cup.

It was one of the biggest wins in our history, against a team that has been at the top of the league these last couple of seasons, and is leading the Premier Division again this year, with 4 wins in 4 matches. And it also represents our first ever win against NDC Ontario, in the 4th matchup between the two teams.

After playing NDC Ontario away from home in the first match of the season, and losing 0-2 despite a solid performance, our ladies turned it up a notch last night, taking the game to our opponents from the start. Our team played with a lot of confidence, and never looked like the underdog, creating plenty of chances to score. The goal from Olivia Brown - a fantastic shot from the edge of the box, into the top right corner - capped an excellent first half. After the break, despite NDC Ontario creating a few very good chances, it was still our team that had the best opportunities to score, but NDC keeper Noelle Henning impressed with a few excellent saves. Our defense held strong until the end, and got Bree Carreiro a well-deserved first clean sheet of the season. It was an impressive team performance, in which, despite Olivia Brown’s great goal, it was Sasha Marikano’s tireless display that earned her the Performance of the match award.

With the win, Guelph United is through to the L1 Cup quarter-finals, where we will be playing away to FC London, at a date and time TBD.

Meanwhile, our next games will take place on Sunday, in the first 2024 double-header at the Centennial Bowl. The women start it off at 2 PM against North Mississauga SC, with the men facing Scrosoppi FC at 5.30 PM. One ticket gets you in to both matches - get yours here.
